How to use a pipe

Introduction

As cannabis becomes more popular following legalization, the ways in which you can consume it will continue to expand.  Not only can you smoke a joint, but you can also vape THC distillate or eat some THC edibles. While all these methods have their own advantages, there’s still something about a traditional pipe that carries with it an old-world charm.

Benefits of Smoking with a Pipe

Pipes are mostly associated with tobacco, but there’s no reason why you can’t use them for marijuana. Using one also comes with a whole host of benefits, including:

  • They’re easy to use.
  • They’re discreet and easy to maintain.
  • You can find a shape and size that suits you perfectly.
  • It’s healthier than a joint because it reduces the number of foreign chemicals the smoke comes into contact with.
  • Pipes come in all sorts of materials, including wood and glass.

Different Types of Pipes

When you start looking at pipes, you’ll notice there’s a huge variety available. Most of them work on a similar principle and just vary in terms of size and usability. So, what are some of the more common types of you’ll find?

Dry Pipes

These are the type of pipe your grandpa used to smoke tobacco. They have three parts; namely a bowl, a mouthpiece, and a carb. They are called dry pipes because they don’t use water to diffuse the smoke, which makes one somewhat harsher to smoke.

They’re easy to use and maintain, however, and come in a huge variety of materials, shapes, and sizes.

Bubblers or Water Pipes

Water pipes use water to diffuse the smoke before you inhale it. They can be made as a solid piece or come with removable bowls. One-piece water pipes are a great mid-point between full-on water pipes and dry, in that they’re relatively portable and still mellow out the smoke.

Other pipes are generally bigger and can have bottoms that are flared out or go straight down. They still work on the same basic principle as other pipes. They tend to be quite big and cumbersome, but provide a solid hit and are easy to use despite looking quite intimidating.

How to Smoke with a Pipe

If you’re wondering how to smoke weed from a pipe, it’s really a very simple process. The basic idea is the same for both dry and water pipes and if you’ve got the technique down for one, you’ll quickly pick up how to smoke from any.

First, you’ve got to prepare your weed, making sure it’s been ground or broken by hand. Then load up the bowl with as much weed as you want. Don’t overload, but don’t be too shy either.

Then find the little hole on the side of the bowl which regulates the airflow to the bowl. This is called the choke. When you light up, make sure you cover the choke with your finger and then hold your flame to the weed and gently create some airflow by sucking in air.

Once the weed is burning, you can release the choke and take your hit. Remember to exhale away from the pipe, since otherwise, you’ll just send all your weed flying. In general, keep the choke covered until you inhale, which is when you release the choke.

Then, either enjoy it on your own or share your bowl with your friends.

Smoking Water Pipes (or bongs)

Water pipes work in mostly the same way as dry pipes. You’ll prepare your weed in the same way, and then fill the base of your water pipe with water. You don’t need to overfill it, about a quarter of the way full is enough. You then pack your weed in the provided bowl and put it in the down-stem that acts like the choke.

When you light your weed, slowly inhale, and watch the water bubble. When you’re ready, inhale while pulling the bowl from the down-stem. Enjoy your hit and pass the pipe around.
